Sustainability Design Considerations for Timber-Concrete Composite Floor Systems

Over the last few decades, there has been growing interest in use of low-carbon materials to reduce environmental impacts construction industry. The advent mass timber panels (MTP), such as cross laminated (CLT), allowed structural engineers specify a material for variety floor design considerations. However, serviceability issues vibration and deflection are limiting longer span timber-only systems have encouraged development timber-concrete composite (TCC) systems. concrete would negatively impact on carbon footprint TCC system should be minimized. purpose this study was embodied system, when ratio varied specific spans. Two MTP products were considered, CLT glued (GLT). floors designed satisfy structural, acoustic, criteria, results presented form tables. It found that using thicker instead adding thickness meet requirement can lead lower values. Increasing long-span led reduction allowable due criterion being controlling parameter. also resulted higher strength stiffness weight ratios, which contribute toward reducing size lateral load resisting foundations, resulting further reductions entire structure.
